TOP 5 BURGUNDY WINES OF 2019

James Suckling Article

Our list of the Top 100 Wines of France tasted during 2019 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, dominated by Bordeaux. More than 60 of the 100 were from France’s most popular wine region. So where did that leave Burgundy?

Burgundy producers continue to ramp up their prices each year, making these bottles harder to buy. For that reason, the tasting team at JamesSuckling.com tends to prefer better value wines that are more accessible to a wider market. However, Burgundy we know has many passionate fans, and we did taste some fantastic bottles last year.

We tasted more than 600 wines from the 2017 vintage, which proved to be a mixed blessing, with some producers appearing to struggle to adapt to the comparatively bountiful harvest compared to years past. Other producers however came through with delicate and fragrant reds, and high quality and concentrated whites.

Below we have pulled out the Top 5 Burgundies we tasted last year, to give these excellent wines some exposure. As well as four 2017 bottles, we also include one 2016, which was a vintage that produced beautifully precise wines.

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS MONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2017

Score: 98 Points

This has a very flamboyant and complex nose already and there is much to offer with a full array of chardonnay fruit, from citrus to peach and into even more exotic, tropical notes. The palate has a super plush, fleshy and flamboyant feel. There’s concentration of flavor, density of texture and fluidity to the shape and depth in the finish. A classic Montrachet, from a plot on the Puligny side between DRC and Ramonet. Drink across the next 20 years.

WILLIAM FÈVRE CHABLIS GRAND CRU LES CLOS 2017

Score: 98 Points

This is in stunning form in 2017, showcasing the kind of symphonic complexity of primary fruit and effortless power that makes it so revered. Limes and lemons, white and yellow peaches, some apples and shaved fennel, fresh chalk and fresh flowers, too. The palate has such seamless and unwavering linearity, driven by contained acidity that delivers a wake of fleshy, white-peach, lime and lemon-curd flavor. So long, seamless and fresh. This is an exceptional Clos. Drink or hold.
