Tenuta di Ghizzano | Tuscany, Italy

Veneroso 2016

A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright ruby red; aromas of black cherry, black plum, thyme and a hint of clove. Medium-full, with excellent ripeness, impressive persistence, very good acidity and well-integrated wood notes. Impressive harmony and lovely Tuscan character, this is approachable now, but it will improve for another 5-7 years, perhaps longer.

Very finely groomed dark cherries and blackberries, as well as earthy and savory complexity. Nicely carved tannins that hold fresh. Vino biologico.

Vinous

The 2013 Veneroso is one of the most compelling wines I have tasted from Tenuta di Ghizzano. Powerful yet weightless, the 2013 presents a beguiling interplay between the aromatic lift of Sangiovese and the darker flavors the Cabernet Sauvignon adds. Sweet tobacco, licorice, dried herbs, tobacco and menthol wrap around the striking, delineated finish. The 2013 is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese is so expressive here, I can only wonder what it might be like on its own.

The nose has attractive rose and spicy red-cherry aromas, leading to a smoothly succulent palate that carries plenty of fruit flesh and depth. Great wine for early drinking.

Wine & Spirits

How is it that a village-level wine from purchased grapes connects so powerfully right from the initial scent? It smells heady and rich, with notes of hibiscus adding to the buzz of energy. The gentle drive of spice rises out of the glass, as if crushing coriander seeds with a mortar and pestle. The texture is yielding, the cherry and red-apple-skin flavors integrated cleanly into the structure.

Wine Advocate

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village exhibits notes of sweet raspberry fruit, spices and smoky oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate with a juicy core of fruit, chewy tannins and appreciable amplitude and power. This hails from an old-vine parcel that Bouchard has purchased for many years and which contains an appreciable percentage of Pinot Gris—not uncommon in Vosne-Romanée.

A lean, tightly wound style, with cherry, rose, spice and stone flavors stretches taut against the firm tannins and acidity. Shows fine elegance and length.
