Premier Cru Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot

April 2019

94 Points

Wine Spectator

A tightly wound style, featuring black cherry, blackberry, mineral and spice flavors fused to a solid spine of acidity and tannins. Dense and long, with vivid acidity focusing the lingering aftertaste.

Smoky cherry, spice and toast notes lead off in this firm and sinewy red, with black cherry, violet, blood orange and chalky mineral flavors underneath. This has terrific energy and fine length, just needs time to integrate.

Once again prominent wood stops just short of dominating the overtly spicy nose of cassis, black cherry, lavender and warm earth scents. There is excellent power and volume to the concentrated, intense and mouth coating mineral-driven flavors that culminate in an impressively long and balanced finish. This is a bigger wine than the Grèves and should amply reward mid-term cellaring.

Powerfully concentrated in its dark cherry flavors and espresso-scented tannins, this is an ambitiously ripe Volnay. There's an herbal, shiso-like cut that adds a note of brightness to the fruit, suggesting the underlying freshness.

Now this is pretty ! Clichéd Volnay aromas of flowers and elegant fruit. Much bigger in the mouth - especially when compared with La-tour’s En Chevret 1er cru. The tannin has more grain too, but also more energy. Some of the flavor, while having a sweet start, seems green toward the finish, but as a complete wine this is an excellent package. The finish is a bit dominated by the taste of the tannins at the moment. Potentially this is a super wine, but it still needs some time.

Meaty and dense, this fresh red offers black cherry, earth and spice flavors. Shows fine balance and tension, with a latent mineral element, finishing with an accent of sweet oak.

Vinous

Bright, dark red. Reticent but pure aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol. Sweet and pliant in the middle palate, showing more black than red fruits. Nicely balanced, rich and intense Volnay, finishing with a suave dusting of tannins and very good grip.

Vinous

Bright, dark red; less saturated than the Taillepieds. Ripe aromas of black cherry, spices, minerals and chocolate, lifted by violet and white flowers. Dense, silky and seamless wine with mouth filling dark berry and chocolate flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Not liqueur-like or at all roasted in spite of the site's rocky, poor soil and the very dry summer. In fact, Weber considers this to be one of the best wines of the 2015 vintage for Bouchard. Finishes very long, with refined tannins spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate.
