Beaune Grèves Vigne de L’Enfant Jésus 2017

The sleek, intense and well-defined medium-bodied flavors exude evident minerality onto the much more complex and persistent finale where the wood telegraphed by the nose reemerges. This is really quite good though note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the generous wood will ultimately be successfully integrated.

The 2017 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L’Enfant Jesus 1er Cru comes from the 3.91-hectare parcel on the mid-slope, currently undergoing piecemeal replanting. It has a wonderful, expressive bouquet of dark cherries, wild strawberry and crushed stone that is easily the best of Bouchard’s Beaune Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and well-judged acidity, perhaps a little oakier than the Les Teurons but with more depth and precision on the finish. Great potential. –NM

A refined nose for Beaune with raspberry pastry and red cherries with a violet-flower edge. The palate has delicate and fine tannins with great structural integrity. The length and balance are very convincing. Approachable red fruit at the finish.

This rich version is tinged with smoke and spicy oak notes, set against a core of cherry fruit. Firms up on the finish, where hints of licorice and spice linger. This remains fresh and balanced, gaining suppleness with air.

This 9.7 acre parcel in Beaune Grèves produces one of Bouchard's most renowned wines, one that often takes ten years to fully develop. It's a wine with grand cru stature, treated to between 30 and 40 percent new oak. The elegance and delicacy of the wine is immediately apparent, though the flavors are shuttered behind the tough austerity of the tannins. The flavor concentration and detail becomes more expressive with air - a scent of rose petals, a buzz of earthy spice, a precise and lithe shape to the structure. A lovely, ethereal 2013.

Sweet, sappy cherry and raspberry fruit is the hallmark of this supple red. Spice and leafy, woodsy accents chime in on the long, balanced finish.

Good bright, deep red. Black fruits, dark chocolate, menthol and spicy oak on the nose and palate. At once plush and vibrant, with a stony note contributing grip. Quite concentrated for this cuvee, which is usually more delicate. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely length.

Good dark red. Black cherry, licorice and bitter chocolate on the nose, plus a whiff of menthol. Juicy and deep, showing excellent definition and lift to its black cherry, chocolate and mineral flavors. Very good energy here, with the tannins avoiding dryness.

A spice-infused red, with a cherry core. Dense and well structured, picking up savory and mineral elements on the finish. The tight structure needs time to resolve.

Prominent wood pushes the otherwise markedly ripe array of somber and earthy dark berry fruit liqueur-like aromas to the background.. There is good energy to the detailed yet impressively rich flavors that are shaped by firm tannins on the long, deep and complex if slightly dry finish that flashes a hint of bitter cherry. This isn’t imbalanced per se at present but it will clearly require time to better harmonize.
