Clos Vougeot 2017

There is excellent concentration to the muscular and quite serious large-scaled flavors that display fine intensity and mid-palate vibrancy, all wrapped in a mouth coating and extract-rich if slightly warm finish. My range assumes that the absence of aromatic freshness will not persist over time.

This has very plush aromas of violets, flowers and blue fruit that follow to the palate with a deep swathe of ripe, round tannins. Long, plush finish. Great power and ripeness here.

Rich and mouth filling, with a velvety texture carrying the cherry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors eloquently. The refined tannins firm this up, leading to a lingering aftertaste.

In contrast to the last few wines where the wood was at low volume, here it all but dominates the distinctly sauvage, even animale nose of pungent earth, underbrush and humus that add breadth to the somber dark currant and plum aromas. There is good richness and power to the moderately concentrated and solidly complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprisingly supple mouth feel; indeed this could aptly be described as supple and while it does tighten up somewhat, this will be an unusually early drinker in the context of what is typical for this wine.

(from parcels at the bottom and top of the Clos, vinified together and aged in 45% new oak): Healthy dark red. Subtle dark fruits, licorice and coffee on the expressive nose. At once silky and vinous, with an impression of almost peppery acidity enlivening the wine's black fruit flavors. Not a weighty or high-pH style of Clos Vougeot. In fact, its serious tannic spine makes it harder to taste today than the Echézeaux and suggests that patience will be required.

Dark red-ruby. Very ripe aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and dark chocolate. Sappy and classically dry, showing superb lift for a young Clos Vougeot. Sweet oak tones contribute to the wine's sex appeal but this Clos Vougeot should be laid down. Bouchard owns parcels in chalky soil near the top of the clos in La Plante l'Abbaye, which yields a delicate style, and close to the Route Nationale in heavier soil, which makes a weightier, less refined wine. (Bouchard also offers a négociant version of Clos Vougeot.)

An intense, vibrant red, offering an immediate impact of ripe, fresh cherry, strawberry, rose, spice and mineral flavors. Fruity, open and seamless, this almost seems a bit too simple, yet continues to build in intensity to a long, pure and saturated after taste.
