Pale, bright yellow. Deeply pitched aromas of yellow peach, grapefruit pith, menthol and iodine. Larger-scaled and broader than the "regular" Chevalier-Montrachet (this plot is actually situated just above Bouchard's parcel in Montrachet--in the 19th century it was considered part of Montrachet--and thus typically displays characteristics of both of these grand crus), with strong, harmonious acidity framing and intensifying the wine's powerful peachy fruit.

Pale color. More closed on the nose than the "regular" Chevalier-Montrachet, with a metallic minerality that calls to mind a dry Riesling. Then very rich, classically dry and youthfully unyielding on the palate, with apple, pear, citrus and dusty stone flavors framed and lifted by terrific acidity. Much less fleshy today than the first Chevalier but equally sappy, and best right now on the slowly building, rising finish. This gripping wine shows no obvious heat despite its 13.8% alcohol.

2014 Chevalier-Montrachet “La Cabotte”: (Bouchard has been separately vinifying this parcel, which at one time was part of Montrachet, since 1992 though the first commercial release was not until 1997; Bouchard jokingly refers to this parcel as their “Montrachet du haute pente”, or upper slope Montrachet). This presently has the same nose as the Corton-Charlemagne as it’s both reduced and mildly woody though I would not expect this to persist beyond the first few years as the reduction is not heavy.

Vinous

Deeper-pitched and less expressive today than the “regular” Chevalier-Montrachet, but hinting at floral and herbal high notes. Then richer, deeper and chewier in the mouth, conveying an almost aggressive quality to its flavors of ripe yellow fruits, citrus peel, menthol and saline minerality. Larger-scaled and more backward, finishing with a tannic impression and serious weight. A finishing note of iodine extends the dry, classic finish. –ST
