Bonnes Mares 2017

A generous application of wood and menthol can be found on the dark pinot fruit, spice, floral and newly turned earth aromas. The rich and muscular if rather supple big-bodied flavors possess a caressing mouth feel, indeed even velvety, before culminating in an impressively persistent finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth.

Explosive aromas of chocolate cake, violet, licorice and pepper. Cherry and chocolate flavors show terrific sucrosité, with brisk underlying minerality and strong acidity giving a sappy quality to the thick middle palate. Most impressive today on the sharply delineated, rising finish. This is beautifully balanced from the start but it's hard to believe that it won't shut down in the bottle.

Here too there is plenty of wood influence surrounding the spice, earth, game, cassis and plum suffused nose. There is fine richness to the velvety and impressively concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel though the firm, robust and muscular finish make it clear that this is built-to-age. This will require more patience than the Clos de Vougeot but it is not so backward that it could not be popped after 7 to 8 years of bottle age.

Deep, bright red. Reticent, brooding aromas of black raspberry, chocolate,
roasted herbs, licorice and green pepper. Wonderfully silky and full without any undue weight. Dark berry flavors are accented by crushed stone, pepper, spices and earth. The tangy, savory aftertaste saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering. Here the stem element gives lift to the wine without overwhelming it. Conveys a very powerful impression of terroir.

(from vines on red clay soil in the middle of this large grand cru): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe aromas of blueberry, violet and spicy oak, along with suggestions of exotic fruits. Plush and fat with fruit, conveying an extravagant impression of sucrosité--and rather low acidity--to its flavors of cherry liqueur and chocolate. This wine will need time in bottle to burn off some of its substantial baby fat. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a repeating chocolatey quality (one of the two barrels was new) that's a bit overbearing today.
