Chablis Premier Cru Vaulorent 2021

September 2022

Vinous

The 2021 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru comes from 3.60-hectares, of course, the only Premier Cru on the same include as the Grand Crus. The soils here are very marn. It has an energetic petrichor, slightly fume bouquet that is very well focused. The palate is well balanced, taut and fresh with fine acidity, lemon verbena and citrus peel emerging towards the finish.

A much less expressive nose, indeed it is all but mute, requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax aromas of white orchard fruit, citrus blossom and seawater. The richer and slightly more powerful flavors also possess a sophisticated mouthfeel along with excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finish where a 5ouch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. In a word, terrific.

This is not quite as aromatically elegant as the Montée de Tonnerre but there is every bit as much depth to the green fruit, citrus, quinine and oyster shell suffused nose. There is fine concentration to the powerful, suave and intensely stony flavors that possess superb finishing complexity on the balanced, clean, very dry and energetic finish. As is often the case, this delivers grand cru quality.

2014 Chablis “Vaulorent”: (from a huge 3.63 ha parcel out of only 17 ha and most of it is hard by Les Preuses. Séguier calls this their “baby grand cru” as specific barrels are selected for vine age, concentration and power). Yet again the ultra fresh and strikingly layered white flower nose is packed with typical Chablis aromas that include cool mineral reduction, citrus and oyster shell nuances. The medium weight flavors are almost painfully intense while brimming with minerality on the chiseled and moderately austere finish that is tight to the point of being linear.

The 2018 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru is clean and precise on the nose, and more classically styled than the Caillons or Fourchaume, with fragrant jasmine, white peach and lemon zest unfurling from the glass. The palate is clean and precise, the acidity beautifully judged, and there is wonderful delineation from start to finish. Linear in style, it does not fan out on the finish, but maintains a fine attack and leaves a lemongrass note tingling on the tongue. Excellent.

The 2016 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has a really lovely bouquet with dried pineapple, musk, chalk dust and yellow flower aromas. The palate is well balanced with a smooth entry, nicely pitched acidity with a gorgeous yellow plum, orange rind and light strawberry finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

Wine Advocate

The 2014 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, which head winemaker Didier Séguier described as "a baby grand cru," was a little cloudier than the Fourchaume in the glass. It has a complex nose with a touch of grilled almond and dried apricot, well defined but just a little sultry at the moment. The palate is relatively rich on the entry compared to the other Premier Crus and this lends roundness and suppleness in the mouth. It gently builds with great precision, hints of lime and apricot flourishing on the peacock's tail of a finish.

A core of stony white peach, apple and lemon flavors is wrapped in a fleshy embrace in this sleek white. Vibrant, lingering with a stony element.

The restrained and layered nose make clear that this could be nowhere else but Chablis with its aromas of algae, iodine, oyster shell and spiced pear. The texture of the medium-weight flavors is also sleek and intense with slightly better density if a bit less refinement to the youthfully austere bitter lemon-suffused finish.

Very pale lemon-green. An essence of Kimmeridgian Chablis on the nose, offering pungent scents of lime zest, powdered stone and white pepper with a strong impression of mineral energy. Boasts terrific intensity and clarity to its brisk flavors of lime, white peach, mint and minerals. Densely packed and firmly structured but not quite hard. This is extremely backward but the marne soil gives it a modicum of silkiness. This broad, full, rather powerful premier cru finishes saline and classically dry, with outstanding slowly mounting length and finesse.
