Chablis Grand Cru Valmur Domaine 2013

Wine Enthusiast

This is the coolest and freshest of the
Grand Cru vineyards. The wine is tight, steely with a nervy core of acidity that gives it a textured, structured character. It is full of energy, crisp, packed with apples and citrus and needing several years aging.

Bright lemon-green. Highly complex nose melds white peach, lemon, flint and white pepper, along with an ineffable touch of brown spices. Very silky and rich but with lovely ripe framing acidity. Conveys a strong impression of saline dry extract along with an incredibly fine-grained texture. A wonderfully suave, seamless, weightless Valmur with superb mounting persistence.

Very pale yellow. Subtle aromas of ripe yellow fruits and spices plus a hint of lichee. Rich, quite ripe and concentrated, showing good inner-mouth tension to the sweet yellow fruit and spice flavors. Large-scaled wine but distinctly austere on the back end owing to strong acidity. The yield from these 50-to-55-year-old vines was under 30 hectoliters per hectare in 2014, according to Didier Seguier.

Wine Advocate

The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur has a very attractive bouquet with hints of praline, white chocolate and yellow flowers and is very expressive and seductive. The palate is very well balanced with a subtle marine influence on the entry. It is harmonious with white peach and a touch of lychee on the fresh and poised finish

Here too the nose is trimmed in just enough wood to notice though it does not interfere with the clear appreciation of the fresh, cool and restrained aromas of green fruit, lemon peel and a plenitude of Chablis character where only a hint of exotic fruit is in evidence. Like the Bougros, this is a big-bodied wine with ample size, weight and mid-palate density as the abundant dry extract imparts a suave and opulent mouth feel before culminating in an impressively rich, muscular and persistent finish.

Elegant, with light thyme and chive elements accenting lemon and earth flavors. Taut and racy, with notes of chalk and mineral on the lengthy finish.

Very pale yellow-green. Pungent scents of lime, flint and white pepper, plus hints of spicy oak, baked bread and butter that suggest a rounder style of wine than the Vaudésir. Indeed, this Valmur is large-scaled, broad, silky and full, with just enough acidity to maintain its shape. Still hiding more than it's showing, though, and in need of aging in spite of its early sucrosité and lack of rough edges. Finishes long, with menthol and spice notes.

This is also discreet to the point of being all but mute and only aggressive swirling manages to liberate the cool aromas of citrus, green fruit and a broad array of typical Chablis elements. Here too there is excellent size, weight and concentration to the big-bodied flavors that possess an almost pungent salinity on the balanced, powerful and borderline painfully intense finale. This is good stuff but patience will be required.

This could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its ripe yet cool, airy and refined nose of green
fruit, mineral reduction, sea breeze and iodine. There is positively gorgeous intensity and laser-like precision to the rich but
wonderfully vibrant flavors that display moderate austerity on the focused, very dry and remarkably persistent finish. This is a
really lovely combination of power and refinement.

View From the Cellar

The 2015 Valmur from Didier Séguier is utterly classic in profile and one of the most reserved and racy wines in the cellar this year. The top flight bouquet delivers a fine array of pear, beeswax, just a touch of tangerine, chalky minerality, white flowers and a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and impeccably balanced, with a fine sense of reserve, a rock solid core, lovely soil signature and superb backend cut and grip on the very long and minerally finish. This will need some time to blossom, but will be one of the wines of the vintage.
